The drilling approach is developed around the formation, the hole program and the available access. Tooling, operating parameters, fluid requirements and handling arrangements need to be considered together. A clear understanding of these factors helps the field team respond appropriately as conditions change.
Core has value when its geological information and position within the hole can be interpreted reliably. Recovery is influenced by the formation and the drilling process, while careful handling, clear depth identification and orderly core trays help preserve the information obtained. Sample requirements should therefore be agreed before work begins.
Diamond drilling requires attention to rotating equipment, rod handling, work-area access and the management of drilling fluids. For underground operations, the work must also be coordinated with the mine’s access, ventilation and emergency arrangements. These requirements form part of the site-specific planning discussion.
